A Death in Shonagachhi
Rijula Das in conversation with Kanishka Gupta
Presented by Amar Ujala
Rijula Das’ engrossing literary debut is a story of the oldest profession and the lives, dreams, dangers and misadventures born in the red-light district of Shonagachhi. Ruthless as it is tender, A Death in Shonagachhi reveals the catacombs of societal divisions and the impediments to dignity, love and humanity. Following many years of research on sexual violence and its connection with public spaces, Das discusses her unblinking novel based in Calcutta’s most fabled, Shonagachhi.
Rijula Das’s debut novel, A Death in Shonagachhi, won the Tata Lit Live First Book Award and was longlisted for the JCB Prize in 2021. It is forthcoming as Small Deaths in the USA and the world in June 2022 by Amazon Crossing. Das is a recipient of the 2019 Michael King Writers Centre Residency in Auckland and the 2016 Dastaan Award for her short story, Notes From A Passing.
