This month’s sound reel depicts Lawrence of Arabia in a light not usually seen. It contains the sometimes frank opinions of four Australian contemporaries of Lieutenant Colonel T E Lawrence CB DSO.
Lieutenant Colonel Lawrence was a British Army advisor to the Hejaz Army in Jordan and Saudi Arabia. In this sound reel is a significant recording from the Memorial’s collection, that of a speech by Brigadier George Langley DSO. He was the Commanding Officer of the 1st Battalion Imperial Camel Corps, and 14th Light Horse Regiment, and tells a story about Lawrence that no one else could tell. Brigadier Langley married Edmee Mary Plunkett, secretary to Lord Edward Cecil of the Egyptian Government. Edmee also expresses her opinion of Lawrence, along with Nicholas Curtain who was a sergeant of the 3rd Light Horse, and Eric Busby of the 6th Light Horse, 1st AIF.
