Initial reports claim that JAL flight 516, an Airbus A-350, was travelling from Shin Chitose airport, near Sapporo, the capital of the mountainous northern Japanese island of Hokkaido, when it struck a coastguard plane set to deliver aid to the earthquake-hit Noto peninsula. Five of the six people aboard the smaller aircraft died, local media reported. All passengers and crew on JAL516 were evacuated safely, according to NHK, the local broadcaster. A total of 379 people were on board — 367 passengers and 12 crew members. Aviation experts said the fact that all the passengers had been saved was “nothing short of a miracle”, given how quickly the aft of the aircraft caught fire.
