The Incredible Power Of Switzerland’s Natural Waterways | Wild Faces of Switzerland

Switzerland is also known as the moated castle of Europe. Without the water supply from the Alps, Europe would be an empty desert. Millions of people would go thirsty, and huge suedes of agricultural land would be parched. Europe’s largest rivers, the Rhine, Rhône, Danube and Po would dry up. Around 260 cubic kilometers of water flows down from the Alps every year, more than five times the volume of Lake Constance. The Swiss mountains play a key role with the melted snow, as the ice from glaciers supply Europe with water. The mountains can also act as rain catchers for the humid air from the Atlantic, as it collides with the massive wall of mountains it releases its moisture in the form of precipitation.
