Profit shifting and tax avoidance; the impact of multinationals tax practices on labour & inequality

The problem of corporate tax abuse is regularly acknowledged in global policy forums, with debates on how best to address the issue continuing. In this session we examine why current tax practices of multinational enterprises are so damaging to employee wages and domestic tax revenue, and how this contributes to increasing inequality and the erosion of the economic and social rights of citizens. The session explores new research and evidence relating to multinational profit shifting; looking at its impact on wage and capital gains and the consequences for inequality, as well as exploring implications of current policies and regulations intended to target these damaging practices. Further, we will draw on the Tax Justice Network’s Corporate Tax Haven Index to analyse the scale of the problem and consider solutions to tackle corporate tax abuse, before opening to an audience Q&A.
