History of St. Patrick’s Day
So why do we celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, and how did it start? St. Patrick’s Day is a time to celebrate Irish heritage and Ireland’s patron saint, Patrick. But, St. Patrick wasn’t even Irish!
He was actually born in Britain in 387. His real name wasn’t Patrick either! He was born with the name, Maewyn Succat. But he later changed it to Patricius or Patrick. And, the color green wasn’t always Patrick’s, or Ireland’s color either! It was blue! It wasn’t until 1798, during the Irish rebellion when supporters used the color green to symbolize their fight for independence, that the color was then forever linked with Patrick and all things Irish. Tradition has it, that if you wear green on St. Patrick’s Day, you will be invisible to Leprechauns. But if you don’t wear green, a leprechaun will be able to see you, and he will give you a pinch!
