Check out the link: Though unheard by many, this song - made popular by Iz Kamakawiwo’ole - was an anthem in Hawai’i when I was growing up during the 80s-90s. If you are not familiar with Hawai’i’s history (pre/post overthrow) - I suggest you educate yourself and look it up. I was lucky to be sent to Kaiapuni (Hawaiian immersion school) when I was young - it was a new adventure in learning, an immersion into the Hawaiian language where all day and all classes were taught in Hawaiian. Not a drop of English was spoken. We would cut and paste Hawaiian translations into science, history and math study books on weekends. We were the third class that ever was - 16 Guinea Pigs in a time when the revival of the Hawaiian language was a mission for the people of Hawai’i.
