Commodus’ (Joaquin Phoenix) plan to get Maximus (Russell Crowe) killed in a rigged fight goes very wrong when he kills the undefeated gladiator. Gladiator (2000) Commodus takes over power and demotes Maximus, one of the preferred generals of his father, Emperor Marcus Aurelius.
