Forma Fabrica By Nir Neria

“Forma Fabrica” is a series of porcelain vases, each uniquely crafted from the same modular, reusable, innovative fabric mold. By utilising 3D printing and sewing techniques, Nir Neria merges technology and craftsmanship, creating delicate patterns, colors and delicate forms in porcelain. The technique involves planning and designing computerised 3D models of the mold required for the desired shape. The mold frame is then 3D printed and assembled, giving the fabric its structure. The fabric mold and its 3D printed frame are modular, reusable and create a unique subtle form to every vessel casted. Furthermore, each mold can be adapted and adjusted to allow different forms based on the designed contour. Another aspect of the technique is the ability to color the porcelain using the fabric mold as a medium to transfer pigments and allows for a range of new coloring possibilities. After extracting the dry porcelain vessel from the fabric mold, the mold can be used again. Nir developed her technique during her Industrial Design studies at Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design. As part of the development process she researched and tested a wide variety of textiles and mechanisms for porcelain casting, eventually mastering her current technique of 3D printed modular frame and fabric mold. Porcelain slipcasting is conventionally casted in plaster molds. Forma Fabrica transforms this paradigm by presenting a controllable yet flexible, reusable fabric mold. Nir set out on this journey to study the relation between fabric and porcelain, between soft and hard materials and the capturing of a moment in ceramic material. The “Forma Fabrica” collection is designed to have an elegant and delicate presence while preserving the essence of fabric and implementing textures and color from ceramic and textile realms.
