The valley, rich in flora and fauna, got its name from the large number of butterfly species that live here. Scientists have recorded about 147 species of flora belonging to 54 families, and 105 species of butterflies from 15 families living in the valley. Butterfly species include the Jersey tiger. From June to September, butterflies of many varieties and colors can be seen in the valley. Due to its natural beauty, the Valley of the Butterflies is an important attraction for ecotourism in Turkey. It can be reached by boat transfer from Belcegiz Beach in Oludeniz, 5-7 km, which runs hourly during the day. The valley offers a variety of outdoor activities such as camping, hiking, canyoning, canoeing and scuba diving. The valley is open to the public all year round. In July and August, around 200 visitors camp in the valley daily.
