Young Hearts Club (1962)

Canning Town, London. M/S of an old bomb site beside some shabby houses in the Docklands area; a vicar walks a row of terraced houses, stopping to chat to a young man playing with a little boy in a toy car outside one of the houses. Commentator talks of the problem of teenagers being forced onto the streets because their homes are too crowded and of “youngsters who can’t take their sweethearts home“. L/S of St Andrew’s Church. M/S inside a church hall showing a rear view of a pop band playing on the stage; crowds of teenagers dance about (they seem to be just jigging up and down with arms linked). Various shots of a room off the main hall, decorated as a parlour or living room, where “couples may sit and talk of marriage and the scheme of their lives together“. Two couples sit and chat, flicking through a magazine of interior design. An older woman brings them orange squash. Note: the vicar seen could be Reverend Eric Shipman.
