Дореволюционная Россия на фотографиях Воронеж около 1900 Pre-revolutionary Russian in photographs Voronezh about 1900 Voronezh lies on the Voronezh River, 12 kilometers (7.5 mi) from where it flows into the River Don. The city originates from around the 12th century as a settlement of Kievan Rus. The current city of Voronezh was established by Feodor I of Russia as a fort in order to protect the important trade route of the ’Muravsky Trail from the Crimean Tartars. During the 17th century the city became a sizable town. Peter the Great built the Voronezh dockyard for the Azov Flotilla for thew Azov campaigns in 1695 and 1696. In the 19th century Voronezh developed as a sizable manufacturing industry centre for the region, including mills, tallow-melting, butter-making, soap and leather goods.
