Salvation Mountain in Slab City is a hillside visionary environment in the California Desert area of Imperial County. It’s located about an hour and a half from Palm Springs, just east of the Salton Sea.
Salvation Mountain is a tribute to God and his gift to the world with its simple yet powerful message: “God Is Love“. It features an adobe mound covered in colorful religious folk art, including:
Giant hearts
Religious crosses
Multi colored swirls
Love messages
Inspirational bible verses
It was created by local resident Leonard Knight (1931–2014) over nearly three decades. It rose as a monument to individual fortitude and artistic inspiration, growing in significance and fame even after Knight died in 2014 at age 82.
Salvation Mountain is located at 603 Beal Road, Niland, CA 92257. It’s open every day from 8 AM to 5:30 PM.
