On this episode of under the microscope we look at a Hornets ocelli, more commonly called simple eyes or eye spots. More specifically it is a blackjackets ocelli. If you are wondering what is the function of ocelli, they are eyes that only detect light. This means simple eyes purpose is to detect motion. Science has discovered several types of eyes and eye spots are very different then human eyes. Its really weird that Hornets have simple eyes in the back of their heads. This obviously serves a huge evolutionary benefit to avoid predation. Before recording insect videos I never knew that Hornets had more than 2 eyes.
