Freud’s Dream Theory (4 of 6): Four fundamental ideas
A dream recounted by the author Philip Roth helps us illustrate the four fundamental components of the dream-work. We focus particularly on the notions of condensation (how compression or ’mash-ups’ work within dreams) and symbolism. Freud’s view of symbolism is not that of conventional ’readily recognizable’ symbols. Why not? Such symbols would not be disguised, and latent dream content needs to be disguised. We close by asking: What is Derek talking about when he talks about a sick dog?
