Act V: Hymns with the Devil in Confessional. The beginning of the boy’s downfall.
[Regress]
One last time, Hunter is approached by the Oracles. He’s told that he’s lost his way, and nothing good will come of this. They say the only thing he can find relief in from now is that he will die soon.
[The Moon / Awake, Cascade]
Hunter is at this point addicted to opium, and sits in his den while he thinks about his mistakes. He realizes he has no control of where his life is going now. Hallucinations form of his younger self, and judges the man that he’s now become. He realizes he’s become the very thing he was trying to bring down; a two-faced manipulative man controlling the City. Yet, he tries to find a way to justify all he’s done.
[The Most Cursed of Hands, Who Am I]
At the Church, The Priest begins to tell a parable to the crowd, but Hunter begins to realize The Priest is really only talking to him. The story tells of The Devil playing a game of poker with a gambler. The Devil puts his own soul into the pot, and intentionally loses the game. The gambler takes The Devil’s souls, and ends up becoming The Devil himself, setting the beast free. Hunter connects himself and The Priest to the characters in the story.
[The Revival]
The Dime has reopened, by the hand of the mayor, forced under The Pimp’s thumb. The Pimp tempts everyone to come back in, loudly advertising the reopening of The Dime. Hunter watches, disgusted at what he’s done, what he’s become, and how there’s nothing he can do.
[Melpomene]
Hunter writes a love letter to Ms. Leading, living a double life in love with her, but marrying The Fiancee.
[Mr. Usher On His Way To Town, The Haves Have Naught]
A politician by the name of Mr. Usher comes to town after hearing the news that a new mayor has been elected. Mr. Usher approaches Hunter, and they have a conversation about the state of the people in the City. Usher finds no value in lower lives, and tries to convince Hunter that he can use the peasants for his own good. Hunter tries his best to show Usher the beauty in all of the people living here, regardless of their status. Usher leaves, and Hunter realizes that this man is far worse than The Pimp and The Priest.
[Light]
Hunter and The Fiancee have a child. After seeing what kind of man Usher is, and the danger he presents to everyone, Hunter takes The Fiancee and their child to live in a cottage by the Lake, and tells his son never to walk beyond the Tree.
[Gloria]
Hunter begins to hallucinate through opium once again. He hates himself and everything he’s being forced to do, but unknown voices call out to him and tell him to press on, that great glory will come from the pain.
[The Flame Is Gone]
Mr. Usher approaches The Pimp in private. He tries to convince The Pimp to murder someone that he knows he’s always wanted out of the way. The Pimp is against it, but Usher is incredibly persuasive, and changes The Pimp’s mind. Usher tells The Pimp “you will return“. But as he leaves, he says again, quietly under his breath, “you won’t return“.
[The Fire Remains]
Hunter discovers the bloodied corpse of Ms. Leading in The Church. He sets fire to the building, giving his love a baptism of fire, a “battesimo del fuoco“. As the building burns to the ground, Hunter gives up on his new identity. He was born Hunter, and he always has been Hunter. There’s no longer any point in pretending to be The Son, a returning war hero.
[The March]
The Pimp stands outside the burning church as people gather, and gets everyone’s attention. He then exposes all of Hunter’s lies and manipulations, even twisting some things to sound even worse, as if Hunter is the one that killed The Son. The Pimp then leads the mob with torches and stones to find Hunter.
[Blood]
The Pimp alone finds Hunter, and tries to talk some sense into the boy. Hunter comes clean, admits all his wrongs, and that he’s no longer living a second identity. Hunter then takes the knife he was given by Terri, and murders The Pimp and The Priest.
[A Beginning]
Hunter has nothing left now. His mother, brother, and lover are all gone. His fiancee and child have left. All that waits for him is death, no matter which way he tries to go. He sees an apparition of the people he loved, one last time, and begs their forgiveness. With no response, he throws himself into the River to drown, hoping that maybe he will get to see them in the afterlife.
