After founding the Brooklyn Orchestra, Glissant set out to create a symphonic arrangement of Aguas da Amazonia, originally performed by Uakti on their own self-built instruments, seeking to make the work playable by any symphony orchestra. Glissant’s intention was to recreate the Brazilian rhythms and feel without requiring specialty percussion or Brazilian musicians, thus expanding performance opportunities for the work.
