Hi Everyone :)
Welcome back!
I get asked often: “Where did you get all this stuff?“ My goal is to share the real magic of science and physics- and to this end I will update here (and in my store) suggestions on where to get some of these toys, kinetic art pieces, and scientific curiosities for yourself.
Purchasing items from the links on these pages will help support my IG page of science and wonder.

👉🏻 Circularly Polarized Reflecting Scarab: the iridescent jewel scarabs like this one (Chrysina Gloriosa) have a very rare property: they reflect only circularly polarized light! When viewed through a filter that allows only left CP light the metallic greens and gold colors of the beetle are clearly visible, but if viewed through a right CP filter hardly any light gets through and the beetle looks dark brown. Circularly polarized light is similar to linearly polarized light except the direction of the electric field rotates around the direction of motion such that there is a left handed version (clockwise) and a right handed version. When left handed CP light reflects off a mirror it becomes right handed and vice versa- as seen here with this beetle’s reflection. My CP light filters came from a pair of RealD 3D movie glasses. Nobel Laureate Albert Michelson was the first to discover that jewel scarabs preferentially reflect left CP light back in 1911.
👉🏻 Mystery Orbiter UFO: hidden within this flying saucer shaped toy is a gyroscope, allowing it to balance at seemingly impossible angles, and causing it to precess around an axis through the contact point. The physics and vector nature of angular momentum! Blowing air through one of the three holes spins this gyroscope up.
👉🏻 Stop & Go Pendulums: a vintage desk toy from the 1980s that features a set of coupled pendulums for which kinetic energy transfers between the pendulums in a dramatic and cyclic way.
👉🏻 Diffractive Optical Element: images produced by constructive and deconstructive interference of coherent laser light.
👉🏻 Denary Dice Set: whimsical and wonderful, this set of dice expands on the standard d4, d6, d8, and d10 to include all integers up to 10- including a d1(!)
👉🏻 The FluoroSphere: intricate and dynamic lights shows are produced within an elegant glass sphere as fluorescent dyes in mineral oil slowly mix into room temperature water. Ultraviolet LEDs (in the base on which the sphere rests) make the dyes glow brightly and reveal the initial nondiffusive mixing structure which includes the phenomena of drops, plumes, and other features of Rayleigh-Taylor instabilities. Shown here, slightly sped up, is the first 8 minutes or so of the process which takes up to half an hour to mix evenly. The green light is characteristic of the famous fluorescein dye.
👉🏻 Cartesian Jellyfish: increasing pressure in the water compresses air bubbles inside the plastic capsules, filling them further with water making them sink in this cute version of the famous Cartesian Diver toy.

3) Anti-Counterfeit Physics: Canadian banknotes integrate a number of security devices including foil rainbow holograms and far field holograms. The bill is not paper but instead a thin film polymer, and some transparent windows are built in- including one shaped like a maple leaf. If a laser is directed through the leaf window the denomination of the note (in this case $5) can be projected onto a wall. Looking through the leaf window at a point of bright light also reveals the holographic image. This note is from the Frontier Series released in 2011.
👉🏻 Diasterism in Rose Quartz: illuminate this polished quartz sphere from behind to reveal a six point star with a center that moves with the light source.
