It forms part of the boundary between Serbia (to the south) and Romania (north). The appearance of the Iron Gate is largely due to the Pannonian Sea, which with its retreat cut the upper part of the gorge. Gorge is important not only for its geographical features, but for its archeological heritage too. One of the most important archaeological sites in Serbia and Europe is Lepenski Vir, the oldest planned settlement in Europe, located on the banks of the Danube in the Iron Gate gorge.
