Gnossienne no. 1 -- Erik Satie -- Dragos Ilie

Erik Satie was in his unique way, an influential figure to the French music and esthetics of the late 19th to 20th century. His Trois Gnossiennes were published in 1893, as short solo piano works. Although highly freely, written without time signatures, they evoke certain dance-like characteristics. Gnossienne is a term invented by the composer, to describe a new type of composition. Few people know of the connection between these pieces and Romanian folk music, which Satie came in contact both at the World Fair in Paris and through his friendship with the Romanian sculptor Constantin Brancusi.
