Ulla Pirttijärvi is a Sami vocalist born in the village of Angeli (Aŋŋel), Finland. She started her career in Angelin Tytöt, but left the group after the first album. Her own music is a combination of traditional yoiks and contemporary music. Sami (or Lapps) are the Native people, primarily farmers and reindeer herders, living in the polar regions of Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Russia.
Yoik, Joik, Luohti, Vuolle or juoiggus is a traditional Sami form of song. Originally, yoik referred to only one of several Sami singing styles, but in English the word is often used to refer to all types of traditional Sami singing. Its sound is comparable to the traditional chanting of some Native American cultures. Learn more: ärvi.
PERSONAL COMMENTARY:
Regrettably, I had no clue what this beautiful lullaby was about. However, I wrote to a Finnish youtube user who told me the song was about a baby in a cradle being rocked to sleep by the wind. That was all I had to go on. And so improvised and created this video while taking a crash course in Lapland culture.
What I found out is the Sami people possess a rich cultural heritage and are known for their close connection to the land they live on. Their ancient religion consists of strong beliefs in the spirit world and the power of nature around them. They believe that everything is connected to the earth, and that the earth is everything. Mountains and fells, as well as bodies of water, were worshiped and sacrificed to. The Sami also believe that everything organic has a soul, and they treat everything and everyone accordingly.
I very much like the Sami culture. For me, the melody of this lulluby reflects the same wisdom and love of Nature, of people, animals and cultures that the Sami people have for Mother Earth, as Native Americans and other indigenous people have for Earth Mother.
Thank you Ulla. I hope that you enjoy this video. Wishing you, your family and friends joy, happiness, good health, prosperity and continued success with all your projects.
