Demolitions in the Jerusalem area,June-July 2023: Authorities demolish 105 structures,151 lose homes

On Jerusalem Municipality, Ministry of Interior and Civil Administration orders, 105 structures belonging to Palestinians were demolished throughout June and July 2023 in East Jerusalem and in adjacent areas lying within the al-Quds District of the Palestinian Authority. Thirty-three of the structures were homes. Twenty of them were demolished by their own owners on the authorities’ instructions. Twenty-nine of the homes were occupied, and the demolition left 146 people, including 65 minors, homeless. Four houses were under construction. One of them was designed to house newlyweds, one was designed to house two women, one was designed to house a future couple and the designation of the fourth house is not known to B’Tselem. Parts of six other houses were demolished on the authorities’ instructions, three by their owners and three by the Civil Administration. In addition to all these, 72 non-residential buildings were demolished on the authorities’ instructions. Six of them were demolished by their owners. As far as the Israeli apartheid regime is concerned, the areas it controls are intended to serve the Jewish public only, and Palestinian construction in them is almost entirely prohibited.
