It is the second of three quartets dedicated to Prince Andrei Razumovsky, whose name it bears. This quartet was composed during the very fertile year of 1806, which also saw the composition of the two other quartets of the same opus (No. 7 and No. 9); the Fourth Piano Concerto; the Fourth Symphony; and the Violin Concerto. Beethoven composed it very quickly, and it was premiered by the Schuppanzigh quartet the following year.
