Freud’s Dream Theory (5 of 6): The warship

Dreams, says Freud, picture words. Dreams find images to stand in for verbal formulas or phrases. We explore some examples (a dream of ’pulling wire’) and explain why rebus picture-puzzles are important in dream interpretation. Returning to Philip Roth’s dream helps us further illustrate this idea, that is, Freud’s notion of ’representability’, especially in the example of Roth’s dream imagery of ’an enfeebled wreck’.
