In this video, I show how I created a small cheese cutting board out of walnut and maple, with purple heart accents.
I designed this cutting board to be face-grain as opposed to end-grain (which is better for heavy use but isn’t as pretty looking). This won’t take much abuse since it is mostly for cutting cheeses and displaying hor devours, so face-grain is acceptable.
This build took me several days, only because I was actually making eleven of these cutting boards. Making just one could easily be accomplished in a day or two.
Not shown in this video is the important step of wiping the board down with water after the first sanding is accomplished to raise the fibers of the wood before sanding a final time. This is important, otherwise the board will feel rough to the touch after it is washed the first time.
I finished the cutting board with two coats of General Finishes butcher block oil because it is food safe and easy to apply.
The final board dimensions are as follows:
6 7/8“ wide
9 1/2“ long (excluding the handle, which is 4 1/2“ long)
5/8“ thick (planed down from 3/4“ starting thickness)
The maple strip is 1 1/8“ wide
The purple heart strips are 1/8“ wide
Both strips are 1“ in from the side and bottom of the board.
