USS Gerald R. Ford is Testing New LASER to Destroy China. The U.S. Navy has successfully tested a high-energy laser weapon system that shot down a mock Chinese hypersonic missile in a simulated attack. The test, which took place in the Pacific Ocean, demonstrated the Navy’s ability to defend its ships from one of the most advanced threats in the world. The laser weapon system, known as HELCAP, or High Energy Laser Counter ASCM Program, is a 300-kilowatt weapon that can fire at the speed of light and track and target unpredictable weapons like China’s hypersonic DF-ZF. The test involved a simulated scenario in which a DF-ZF missile was launched from a Chinese ship toward a U.S. aircraft carrier. The HELCAP system, which was installed on a nearby destroyer, detected and tracked the incoming missile using its sensors and radar. It then fired a powerful laser beam that burned through the missile’s nose cone and destroyed its guidance system.
