Creating a Normal Map for Hand-Painted Textures in Mudbox, Photoshop, and Unity3D
Sorry I keep cutting back and forth to my web browser, I like to have podcasts or something playing in the background :).
Theoretically, almost any 3D sculpting program could take the place of Mudbox. All you need to be able to do is make an impression of your texture and export a normal map. It helps if the program supports tiling, but you can fix tiling errors in Photoshop if you need to.
