3 Reasons Why YOU Should Study PHYSICS | Math, Science, Programming, + Job Prospects!
Thinking about physics? Here are 3 reasons (and a bonus mini 4th reason) why you should study this wonderful subject!
Hey everyone, today we’re looking at PRACTICAL reasons to study physics, whether that’s at high school level, or all the way through to a degree and a PhD.
Of course, studying physics gives you a deep insight into the workings of the universe - but this is a fairly abstract reason to learn the subject. Instead, I wanted to give you some practical reasons to spend time messing around with equations and scientific equipment!
0:00 - Overview
2:33 - Analytical Skills (get real good at mathematics)
6:44 - Understanding the Scientific Method (thinking critically and fact-checking people’s arguments)
20:31 - Computational Physics (learn how to code as part of an education in physics!)
25:01 - Bonus: Job Prospects (many jobs in many different quantitative fields)
The point I’m trying to make in this video is that studying physics allows you to learn a large range of highly useful skills. Yes, you could pick up these skills individually elsewhere, but I believe that physics gives you the chance of learning a little bit of each of them. It makes you a well-rounded person (but then, I am biased aren’t I?)
Analytical Skills - any bit of mathematics that can be applied to our universe will be in some way studied by a physicist.
Understanding the Scientific Method - you will also get a deep understanding of how science works, which will give you a framework to fact-check anybody that may tell you anything that sounds wrong to you. I apply this skill in my day-to-day life all the time!
Computational Physics - programming now comes built in to physics degrees. This is because we can use programming to simulate experiments that we don’t yet have the time, money, or knowledge to conduct in real life.
Job Prospects - Aside from going into research and teaching, there are a large number of quantitative fields that look favourably upon physicists (such as data science, investment banking, and lots more).
If you enjoyed this video then please subscribe for more fun physics content! I like to explain fairly advanced physics concepts, but without needing to have a physics degree to understand them!
