Depuis la chute le 17 avril 1975 de Phnom Penh au Cambodge, passée aux mains des Khmers rouges, le canon tonne aux portes de Saïgon. Le 30 avril les troupes communistes nord-vietnamiennes pénètrent dans la ville. La capitale du Sud Vietnam était encerclée depuis plusieurs jours.
