STORYLINE:
A group of Palestinians buried their loved ones killed in Israeli airstrikes on Gaza, as the crisis in the besieged Palestinian territory deepens and the death toll rises.
Israeli airstrikes have continued to pound the southern city of Rafah, where Palestinian families have taken refuge following the Israeli military’s evacuation order to the population of northern Gaza and Gaza City.
Monday just after midnight, an airstrike hit a house where three displaced families who fled Gaza City were sheltering.
Survivors from the Al-Masry, Al-Akhras and Hamouda families said that 12 people had been killed in the airstrike and that another nine people were still missing under the rubble.
The survivors stood in a sea of rubble, a vast desert crater where their building once stood.
Many Palestinians in Gaza Strip reported some of the most intense bombardment late Sunday and early Monday across the strip as Israel prepares for an expected ground invasion in the north.
Israel’s retaliation on the Gaza Strip has laid entire neighborhoods to waste and killed 2,750 Palestinians and wounded more than 9,700, according to the health military in Gaza.
The air campaign comes after Hamas launched a brutal attack on Israel that killed over 1,300 Israelis, and abducted dozens of women, children and soldiers.
Israel has also tightened its siege on Gaza, cutting off supplies of humanitarian aid and fuel, leading to a humanitarian catastrophe in the crowded hospitals.
International mediators were hoping to find an agreement to open the crossing from Gaza into Egypt at Rafah, which has been closed under the airstrike threat.
