Women’s Prohibition Demonstration (1914)

Titles read: ’1914 - Women’s Prohibition Demonstration’. Location of events unknown - probably London. March in 1914 calling for prohibition during wartime. March is led off by a young men’s marching band; and several men walk along in the march; but women are in the majority. Banners such as ’The British Lion is Awake. So is the Lioness.’; ’Women of Scotland Demand Prohibition During the War’; & one with a picture of a bottle on its side and ’SOS’ - also looks like it says ’Britain’s Baby Killer’. Crowd of spectators watch. Marchers also carry various flags; including many Japanese ones - don’t know reason. (Could be symbol of temperance at this time? SL.) They weren’t entirely successful; alcohol was never totally prohibited but the Defence of the Realm Acts - DORA - drastically shortened hours of pubs; and the King set an example of further sobriety by banning alcohol from the Palace. World War One; home front. FILM ID: A VIDEO FROM BRITISH PATHÉ. EXPLORE OUR ONLINE CHANNEL, BRIT
