Once upon a time in Birmingham, England, there was a close harmony trio known as The Clifftones. Consisting of Rod Allen, Glen Dale, and Barry Pritchard, they began their musical journey in 1962. The group’s melodic tunes and captivating performances soon caught the attention of music lovers. In 1964, their second single, ““Caroline,““ became the signature tune for the pirate radio station Radio Caroline. Despite the exposure, the song failed to become a hit. However, their fortunes were about to change when renowned songwriters Roger Greenaway and Roger Cook took them under their wings in 1965. Under the guidance of Greenaway and Cook, The Clifftones, now known as The Fortunes, achieved their breakthrough with the single ““You’ve Got Your Troubles.““ The song was later covered by Neil Daimond, The drifters, Brenda Lee and others. The Fortunes signed with United Artists in 1967, but it wasn’t until 1969 that they scored another hit with ““Seasons in the Sun,““ a translation of Jacques Brel’s ““Le moribond““ by Rod McKuen. In 1971, The Fortunes experienced a revival with a series of three hits: ““Here Comes That Rainy Day Feeling Again,““ ““Freedom Come Freedom Go,““ and ““Storm in a Teacup.““ However, after this resurgence, the band gradually transformed into an oldies act, undergoing numerous lineup changes. This recording for Toppop is from June 21, 1974 Dutch TV programm ‘Vlieg er eens uit”.
