Arpoador is a beach and a rock formation, both located in the neighborhood of Ipanema, in the municipality of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
It is located between the beaches of Diabo and Ipanema. It has restricted space, as it is a small beach, about 500 meters long. Arpoador beach is known as the surfers’ beach, as it has many large waves, suitable for the practice of this sport.
It is also very common and an attraction to watch the sunset at Pedra do Arpoador, a spectacular piece entitled to a round of applause.
The name of the place comes from the fact that, in the past, it was possible to harpoon whales at Pedra do Arpoador. Thus, historians attribute the origin of the name “Arpoador“. The fact that, in the colonial period, the place was used by fishermen (arpoadores - harpooners in English) for observation and later fishing of whales that approached the place with harpoons.
