Conservatorships and Mental Illness

Under the law in the United States, a conservatorship is the appointment of a guardian or protector by a judge to manage either or both the financial affairs and daily life of another person due to old age or physical or mental limitations. In this video, we discuss the ethical implications of conservatorships, and also discuss this in relation to the growing “Free Britney“ movement surrounding Britney Spears’ conservatorship. Perhaps there is room to revisit how we support these people who are currently being put under conservatorships so as not to strip away all personal autonomy.
