Shot by an unknown American who had a passion for all thing aviation, this extraordinary silent home movie shows scenes shot in the early 1930s. The film features several planes, one of which is a 2-seat Waco 10 biplane tail # NC669N. Unfortunately, we do not know who owned or piloted that aircraft, and everyone in the film is anonymous. The film is fascinating in that it shows the early era of aviation, where private pilots landed on golf courses and flew with wild abandon to whatever destination they chose. The amateur cinematographer got some amazing images for the era, including many air to air shots from a moving plane.
Scenes include the following:
(:14) Florida beaches seen from NC669N, 1930. At (:24) the pilot or passenger’s face is shown in the cockpit. At (:29) buzzing over a car driving along a dirt road. At (:50) take off from golf course at Mountain Lake, Florida (Lake Wales, Florida). At (1:34) wingtip views of Florida Shores. At (4:18) is an interesting shot from the air of a decrepit, ruined resort hotel, possibly destroyed in the devastating Okeechobee Hurricane of 1928. At (4:32) the SS Allan Jackson, an Standard Oil tanker, is buzzed. (This ship would be torpedoed and sink in 1942.) At (4:54) the fliers visit Daytona Beach, Florida. At (5:09) a title card announces “Our Flight Home from Detroit“ and shows two aircraft flying in loose formation. At (6:49), 1932 flights at DeLand, Florida. These are rather extraordinary images as they are amateur shot from a moving plane, of another aircraft taking off and climbing. At (12:30) are images of Miami shot from the air, and at (13:34) Palm Beach. At (14:05) the same Waco biplane (with possibly a slightly altered paint scheme) is shown piloted by someone named Lewin.
