LIVE: Berliners demonstrate against overturned ’rental cap’

Protesters take to the streets of Berlin on Sunday, May 23, to demonstrate against the decision of Germany’s Constitutional Court to overturn Berlin’s ’rental cap’ law aimed at protecting tenants from exorbitant rents. Passed into law in January 2020, Berlin’s rent cap or ’Mietendeckel’ law froze rents in the German capital for five years. Participants are holding the demonstration under the title ’Stop the rent madness - now more than ever!.’ The Berlin rent cap went into force on February 23, freezing rents of around 1.5 million apartments at their 2019 level. Tenants are now facing months of back-payments to landlords that stretches into thousands of euros for some.
