Fires in Izmir A forest fire in Turkey’s Izmir province near the Aegean Sea has been raging for two days. The fire has engulfed residential areas, forcing the evacuation of at least 900 people. The Ministry of Forestry reported that 72 fires broke out nationwide in a single day. These fires have affected at least 1,600 hectares across the country. The Minister of Agriculture and Forestry stated that the fire was caused by a campfire set by three individuals during a picnic. He reported that 17 houses have burned down as a result of the fire. Additionally, 105 homes and 44 businesses were evacuated as a precaution. When the fire approached other residential areas, the roof of a ten-story apartment building was also destroyed. According to the Ministry of Interior, a total of 900 people were evacuated in Izmir. The Izmir municipality announced that those affected by the fire were accommodated overnight in a nearby sports complex. The fire is no longer considered a threat to urban areas. Turkish authorities are working to apprehend the three individuals believed to be responsible. Separate wildfires have been burning in Bolu province for three days. In Manisa province, fires have been ongoing for four days. In Manisa yesterday, the neighborhoods of Karayakup with 20 houses and Yeniköy with 57 houses were evacuated.
