Living on $2 a day: Aussie hitchhikers in NZ (1975) | RetroFocus
In the mid-70s, hitchhiking was discouraged in Australia and banned by law in many countries. But thousands of young Australians were discovering New Zealand – close enough to fly to, with freedoms unmatched back home. Often, living rough and hitchhiking in New Zealand was seen as ‘training’ for richer adventures in Europe and elsewhere overseas.
The ABC’s Weekend Magazine aired this story in 1975 (exact date of transmission unknown.)
