Leonard Bernstein: Mahler-Symphony No. 2 “Resurrection”, IV: Urlicht. Sehr feierlich, aber schlicht

[4/5] Leonard Bernstein conducts the London Symphony Orchestra and the Edinburgh Festival Chorus in a performance of Mahler’s 2nd symphony, 4th movement. This is the shortest movement of this symphony at a length of 5 minutes, and is mainly set in the key of Db Major. This is the 8th of 46 teaser videos to the upcoming “Bernstein - The 10 Mahler Symphonies Das Lied von der Erde” project. The fourth movement, “Urlicht“ (Primal Light) is marked Sehr feierlich, aber schlicht (Very solemn, but simple). It is a Wunderhorn song, sung by an alto, which serves as an introduction to the Finale. The song, set in the remote key of D♭ major, illustrates the longing for relief from worldly woes, leading without a break to the response in the Finale. Traditumium 27 Mar 2021
