Building a small plywood boat based on the Tewantin
I built this boat in the summer of 2021. It is built from normal construction plywood and epoxy.
Boat specifications:
Design based on the Tewantin by Tim Weston:
3,4 m long and 1,5 m wide, final weight is 88 kg.
Around 6 hp is a good motor size and the boat can safely take 3 persons (probably more). It planes with 1 person and my electric motor (ca 5 hp), but with more people in the boat it does not get up on plane with the electric motor.
Materials list:
- 6 mm pine plywood, 4 sheets 1,4 x 2,5 m
- 9 mm spruce plywood, 2 sheets 1,4 x 2,5 m
- About 10 kg of epoxy
- Some glass fibre sheet, 160 g/m²
- Polyurethane paint, 2 liters (1 litre per side of the boat)
- Some planks, screws, etc...
The total material cost was around 1000€.
Overall I am happy with how it turned out, the only problems I see are that:
- It is a bit heavy (I could have used thinner plywood and less wooden details, but the boat would not be as sturdy)
- I should have put one or two layers of fibreglass on the bottom of the hull and the railing to protect it from wear.
As always I am happy to answer questions in the comments :)
