Anomaly presents itself as a sequel, set some years after GSC Game World’s original trilogy, and combines and expands the environments from all three of those original games. The Zone — the haunted, irradiated and mutant-infested land around Chernobyl — is bigger and more detailed than ever. Strelok, the player character from the first game, is apparently back too, and following rumours of his return leads into several large story quest arcs, in-between dozens of scripted side-quests and procedurally generated jobs. While story objectives are mostly just ’go here, talk to this person, recover this item’, it’s an interesting enough reason to explore deep into hostile territory.
- Anomaly is and should be the grade A example of how to do immersion and especially survival right in a videogame
For the unanitiated - Anomaly was a mod, now standalone for - Call Of Prypiat which was the third and so far final entry in the series and is in itself a pretty damn good game. However, we’re talking about Anomaly here. So what is Anomaly. Well basically what the creators did is they took all three maps from all three games (Call Of Chernobyl, Clear Sky, Call Of Prypiat) and merged them into one, along with its NPC’s and factions. It also adds all the factions from the three games, all of which you can choose to side or be against with and each have their own unique set of missions to complete. But, that’s not the reason why i think Anomaly is the best survival game ever made. The reason for that is there’s ! The amount of player agency that Anomaly gives over to you can be downright overwhelming sometimes.
Just in the faction selection menu alone you can choose your starting loadout, your faction, your character avatar, your clothes, your starting weapons, their condition, and you can choose to spawn in different locations on this gigantic map depending on what faction you picked to side with. But that’s not all folks, oh i barely scratched the surface
You wanna adjust weather patterns and determine when it will be raining, snowing, fogging and for how long? Check.
You wanna change how populated the world will be with both mutants and other people from other factions? Check.
You wanna adjust how vunerable your armor is to bullets, from soaking them up like soup to being akin to power armor? Check
You wanna determine you carryweight? Check
You wanna determine how fast it will take you to get thirsty or hungry or how much you’ll have to feed yourself to survive? Check
You wanna determine how fast your guns get repaired by merchants, whether it’s immediately or waiting a few days for a more immersive experience? Check
You wanna put on a disguise to sneak into enemy strongholds and determine which specific parts of the disguise would make people suspicious, including removing patches from uniforms to blend in better? Check
Do you wanna determine whether or not factions that were previously enemies can become friends by helping each other out? Fucking check.
And there’s so, so, So much more! It’s downright insane. And you know what the best part is? This mod, this independently made mod who’s options and customization dumps all over any other survival completely free! Yes, you heard me. 100 percent free. You don’t even need to have any of the games to play it, it’s completely free and runs on an upgraded engine from the games as well.
