Experts raise alarm: Could flood waters cause an uranium disaster in Russia? | DW News

People in Russia’s Kurgan region have been dealing with weeks of unprecedented flooding that’s forced thousands from their homes. Now they could be facing a new danger. Russian environmentalists are raising the alarm over a potential radioactive leak. The source: the Dobrovolnoye uranium mine located near Kurgan on the Russian-Kazakh border. The mine contains over 7,000 tons of Uranium and is in the path of rising floodwaters. Flooding means it’s possible that radioactive material could poison rivers and freshwater sources in the region. The Russian nuclear energy agency Rosatom says that small amounts of uranium in drinking water are unproblematic, and they’re accusing the population of “radiophobia”. Is the issue being downplayed?
