A pod of 16 or 17 killer whales has become trapped in drift ice off the Island of Hokkaido in northern Japan, the Yomiuri newspaper said. According to the newspaper, a local scientist caught drone footage of the orcas diving and surfacing in a bid to get out of the ice trap about one kilometer off the coast. Judging by the video, the pod includes both adults and calves. The killer whales disappeared under water during the second half of the day, which may mean that they died.
