-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Steps:
Step 1. First you will need to download the following files listed below. You will see 2 architectures (x86 which is 32-Bit, and x64 which is 64 bit) Most XP installations normally have the x86 architecture. But to double check you can click the “Start Button,“ right click “My Computer,“ and under System you should see x64 (64-Bit) if your pc is 64-Bit, or no architecture meaning you are running the x86 (32-Bit) version of Windows XP.
Step 2. The next thing you will need to do it press the Windows Key R on your keyboard to open the Run Dialog. Type winver and hit enter. Underneath Microsoft Windows, you should see the Version string. In side the brackets beside the version/ build sting, you should see text saying something along the lines of “Service Pack 1 or Service Pack 3.
If you don’t see a service pack number and text, it means you are running the RTM version of Windows. If you have Service Pack 3 then you can skip this step. After you have found out what architecture of Windows you are running and what version of Windows XP you are running, you will need to download the Service Packs after the current Service Pack you are running.
For example if you are running Service Pack 1, you will need to download Service Pack 2, then Service Pack 3. You can’t install Service Pack 3 right away, you have to install them one by one. If you are running the RTM version, then you need to install Service Pack 1, then Service Pack 2, then Service Pack 3. If you are running Service Pack 2, then you just need to install Service Pack 3. Please note that if you are running the x64 (64-Bit) edition of Windows XP, Service Pack 2 is the final Service Pack for that edition.
Step 3. After you have updated to the latest Service Pack, you will need to download the Windows Update Agent. Remember to download the file which corresponds to your systems architecture. Download the file, then double-click on it to open it. You will see a windows pop-up. Click the Next button, then click the check mark circle beside “I Agree“ meaning we are agreeing to the license agreement. Wait a little bit, it is installing the Windows Update Agent. Then click finish and restart/ reboot your pc.
Step 4. Next you need to download the registry file, you can apply this regardless of the systems architecture. After you have opened the file, click Yes, then click OK and restart/ reboot your pc.
Step 5. (If you are not running SP3) Download the rootsupd file, double click on it and then it will automatically update the root certificate to April 2016.
Step 6. After you have installed all of that, you need to press the Windows Key R and hit enter to open the Run Dialog. Type “wuauclt /detectnow“ without the quotation marks. Then look in the bottom right hand corner of your screen in the system tray for a yellow icon with a exclamation mark. If you see one appear click it. (If it appears go to Step 8)
Step 7. (If The Icon Doesn’t Appear) If the icon doesn’t appear, click the Start Button, click Control Panel, click Security Center, then click Automatic Updates under Manage security settings for: It should be in a category with Internet Options and Windows Firewall. Click it and check the circle beside Notify me but don’t automatically download or install them. Then click Apply and close out of the Window and Control Panel.
