Keir Starmer has announced his intention to seek an EU-wide agreement for returning asylum seekers who arrive in Britain while pledging to “smash the gangs“ responsible for small boat crossings. Labour’s stance on the issue of migration is that any agreement with Brussels should involve a ‘quid pro quo’ arrangement. This means that the UK would accept quotas of migrants from the bloc, in exchange for sending back individuals who arrive in the country illegally. The system is expected to function through applications at UK embassies located on the continent. Priority would be given to individuals who already have family in the UK.
