? Chinese coast guard ships have again used water cannons against Filipinos who were patrolling the waters near Scarborough Reef. Compared to past clashes, this one can be considered relatively harmless.
Official sources in the Philippines claim that the Chinese damaged the cabin glazing on one of the ships - no casualties have been reported so far. We are closely monitoring this, because as recently stated, the death of even one Filipino sailor would be grounds for activating the US-Philippines Mutual Defense Treaty.
The Filipinos also confirm that the barrier of buoys set up by the Chinese near the “entrance“ to the Scarborough Reef waters has still not been removed. It’s still interesting what the Philippine side will do about it - last time, Filipino sailors dove and cut the ropes with knives.
