SpinVFX completed two whole sequences for Marvel’s Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. Led by VFX Supervisor Wesley Sewell, the first scene we did is where the characters go to Hank Pym’s basement and get sucked into the quantum realm which is a critical part of the story. For this shot, Paul Rudd was photographed on a blue-screen. So we had to add in the entire background. But interestingly, we had to figure out what that background would look like if you were being shrunk down and diving into the quantum realm. In the end, we came up with a really fun twisting and distorting basement that works great!
Our most challenging and fascinating sequence was the quantum desert scene. Once the characters are in the quantum realm, they go off on many adventures. Early on, they come to a vast desert filled with massive and bizarre ruins. Some of these strange objects even levitate above the desert in front of beautiful ethereal skies.
The filmmakers then asked us to add some strange connective tissue between these “magic carpet” pieces as they split. So we came up with a stringy gooey addition to add to the strangeness. At the end of the sequence, and very important to the story, the characters are given one of these giant flying trilobites to fly off into their next adventure. So we did a really fun shot where a trilobite flies in and lands next to the characters. And this particular trilobite got to have some really great close-ups!
And it was a real pleasure to work again with the amazing people at Marvel and be able to do this epic and unusual sequence in its entirety.
