Visit Visit our website “Police: The Human Dimension“ (1975) is a color, educational film made by Florida State University’s School of Criminology with professor and criminal justice consultant Dr. George L. Kirkham. Produced by Harper & Row Publishers, Inc under grant no. 74 DF 04 0020 of the Law Enforcement Assistance Administration of the U.S. Department of Justice, this film is one of a series that takes the viewer through various common situations or scenarios that come up for policeman that call their ethics into question. The film is composed of five scripted short scenes that each highlight a different ethical dilemma that could be faced by officers from abuse of power and accepting bribes to drinking and sleeping on the job. Kirkham and partner Smitty) as they have serious conversation while parked - Smitty confronts Kirkham about drinking on the job (1:25-4:25). Ethics Situation 2: Headlights of cop car illuminate scene, cop stops young woman with platinum blonde hair wearing vibrantly colored floral dress for driving through stop sign, after short back and forth the officer abuses position and makes an offer for the woman to let him into her apartment for a night together instead of getting a ticket; when the officer returns to cop car patrol partner becomes complicit in situation by not protesting behavior (4:27-7:24). Ethics Situation 3: POV as if passenger in back seat of patrol car with view of back of two officers and the view through the windshield, sounds of police radio; cops pull over drunk man driving perhaps 1970 Plymouth Satellite Convertible on quiet residential street, corrupt cop convinces partner to take a bribe instead of arresting driver (7:31-11:02). Ethics Situation 4: Headlights of cop car slowly come into focus before patrol car pulls off onto side of road, close-up of two cops inside (one senior and one rookie in training) discuss the day’s work, despite being on night patrol, senior cop convinces trainee that they should get some sleep rather than do their jobs (11:08-14:56). Ethics Situation 5: Two officers sit in diner booth discussing weekend plans over coffee when call comes in over radio, patrol car headlights illuminate warehouse where officers respond to break-in, first officer that enters is shot by assailant and second officer shoots assailant to kill out of revenge (using a 1975 Remington 870 L.E.
