“Way Out There“ performed by Slim Cessna and Dwight Pentacost for Church of Coen
The Church of Coen is a monthly series of Coen Brothers movies paired with music from the films performed by Denver-area musicians. Hosted by Theresa Mercado and Ian O’Dougherty, the series takes place on the second sunday of each month at Syntax in Denver, Colorado.
“Way Out There“ from Raising Arizona, performed by Slim Cessna and Lord Dwight Pentacost: The song was written around 1927 by Bob Nolan while he traveling via train. He met Roy Rogers in 1931 and recorded the song as Sons of the Pioneers in 1936.
The version in Raising Arizona (with Ben Freed on banjo and yodeling by John R. Crowder) is based on Pete Seeger’s version from his “Goofing Off Suite.“ It also includes Seeger’s version of Beethoven’s Symphony #9.
