ALL MY PUNY SORROWS INTERVIEW WITH MICHAEL MCGOWAN & CAST
Michael McGowan’s excellent film adaptation of Miriam Toews’ best-seller My Puny Sorrows explores the relationship between sisters Yoli and Elf; one’s navigating divorce and a rebellious daughter, the other, a renowned classical pianist, the end of life. Alison Pill and Sarah Gadon are the bright centres of this chamber piece exploring family history, imagined legacy, and the relationships and events that failed them. Yoli’s the glue that holds everything together, as Elf determines to take control of her life, even if her loving sister and Mennonite mother (Mare Winningham) are afraid for her. The script is supple and witty, funny at times, and profound, and the performances rise powerfully to the material. What She Said’ Anne Brodie spoke with McGowan, Pill, and Gadon. Opens on April 15 in Toronto, Vancouver, and Winnipeg with other cities to follow.
